Elsie - Little Creatures

Little Creatures:  WA’s best known brewer?

Little Creatures Brewery was originally founded in 2000, by a group of mates from Perth: Howard Cearns (Marketing Specialist), Nic Trimboli (restaurateur) and Phil Sexton (master brewer).  Prior to getting Little Creatures up and running, these three men all worked together at the Matilda Bay Brewing company – you could say beer and entrepreneurial pursuits were (and are) in their blood.  The name “Little Creatures” refers to the live yeast cultures that turn the sugar in the malt wort into alcohol, and was allegedly inspired by either a Talking Heads album: Little Creatures, or a scene in J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit (little creatures wandering from ale house to ale house).  We’d have to call them to ask…

In 2012, Little Creatures was bought wholly by Lion Nathan Australia, but was able to retain its well-loved ethos and approach to brewing that made it so famous.

Style

“Elsie is inspired by the gold rush era Steam Ales of California. It’s our adaptation made fresh locally on our very own West Coast. Elsie is a refreshing ale with hints of citrus that give way to a subtle maltiness, finishing clean and dry. It’s the perfect beer for the west coast lifestyle.”

Tasting note

Brewed exclusively for WA (like the Furfy is for VIC), Elsie is citrusy, crisp, unfiltered and brewed with a lager yeast… showing notes of ripe lemon, bergamot orange and hints of tropical fruit.”

“We’ve named the beer ‘Elsie’ after our beloved Kombi. She’s been with us since Day 1 – just like WA.” Elsie (think L-C… Little Creatures) the Kombi was used in the beginning as the delivery van for the brewery, and is still there, parked in pride of place out the front of the brewery.
