Wine of the Month special: 9 September - 6 October, 2019

Houghton was established in 1836 and is one of Australia's oldest operating wineries. The Swan Valley site’s colourful history includes tales of pioneer Scots, bandits, and generations of winemaking craftsmanship. We captured the nation’s attention in 1937 when winemaker Jack Mann created Houghton White Burgundy. Still popular today, Houghton White Classic is sold alongside our iconic, award-winning Cabernet Sauvignons.

Ross Pamment - Houghton Senior Winemaker

In 1999, Ross was appointed to the role of winemaker at Houghton Wines. The opportunity was an exciting chance to work with fruit from all of the major wine growing regions within WA and produce a breadth of wine styles.

In 2001, Ross was the inaugural recipient of the “Qantas Medal”, presented by Australian Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine to encourage excellence among young winemakers.

In 2004 Ross attended the weeklong ‘Len Evans Wine Tutorial’. One of only twelve scholars selected to attend annually, Ross says “this was a once in a lifetime experience.”

Following the departure of Rob Bowen as Houghton’s Senior Winemaker in 2009, Ross naturally stepped up into this position. Ross now holds the mantle of maintaining the definitive and consistent style of Houghton White Classic while also crafting small parcels of fine wines from Margaret River, Pemberton, Frankland River and Great Southern wine growing regions.
