On the Vine - Your Premium Wine Guide

Every fortnight, the Liquor Barons wine panel meets in the cellar of the Liquor Barons Swanbourne store, to look through 30-40 wines. This is conducted totally masked, and is an exhaustive process. The wines are discussed after each bracket and all points are shared and recorded. In this way, the best wines are selected on their merits - not their labels - and are then presented to you each quarter. Consider us your personal wine buyers.

Wine expert Rod Properjohn leads this effort, with his wealth of wine knowledge and experience he presents you with tasting notes for each wine, enjoy!

We have been flat chat over January and early February to get this list of recommendations to you. The tastings we had were stimulating with the usual suspects popping up and some new wines absolutely shining. While we still have warm weather, we advise you to keep chilling your red wines, 14-17 degrees is the ideal temperature range and the enjoyment factor will be increased dramatically. Be quick to buy the wines listed, they won’t last at the prices.

Cheers. Rod Properjohn.

Hay Shed Hill Pinot Rose_20187.jpg

The Pawn El Desperado Rose_2018.jpg

El Desperado 2018 Adelaide Hills
Tempranillo Sangiovese Rosé

We like this wine by the Pawn Wine Co. and have featured it before. It’s the attractive salmon colour, the lightness of body, dryness, zesty fruit, overall freshness and crisp cleansing finish that appeals. To express these qualities it needs to be opened soon. Lovely luncheon wine.

Hay Shed Hill Pinot Rose_20187.jpg

Hay Shed Hill 2018 Margaret River
Pinot Noir Rosé

Pinot noir makes very smart rosé wine, however most winemakers prefer to craft more expensive reds from it. We love the flavour in this, the varietal characteristics of red berry and the savoury edge, an ideal trait in modern pink wine. It also finishes crisp and dry, which is of paramount importance.

Urlar Pinot Noir_2015.jpg

Urlar 2015
Gladstone Pinot Noir (NZ)

An organic wine from Gladstone at the bottom of the North Island. We are keen on pinot from this small region and this has a bright ruby colour, fresh berry and spice, a touch of pinot funk, silkiness, good length and classical balance. All you need to enhance it is char-grilled quail.

Port Phillip Estate Pinot Noir_2017.jpg

Port Phillip Estate 2017
Red Hill Pinot Noir

From the Mornington Peninsula, this is pretty well what we expect in a pinot from this neck of the woods. There’s the freshness of sweet fleshy cherry fruit, a hint of gaminess and fine tannins adding to the structure. It lingers long on the palate with energetic acidity mopping up on the finish.

Harewood Res SSB_2017.jpg

Harewood Estate 2017
Reserve Semillon Sauvignon Blanc

Good style and well made Great Southern wine. We enjoy the rounded lemon grass characters along with leesy textural notes, which add to the flavour and palate weight. Quality semillon asserts its majority status here with its lemony influence and sav blanc imparts a light tropical fruited lift.

Maude SB_2018.jpg

Maude 2018
Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc (NZ)

There are no tricks or gimmicks with this young Kiwi savvy. You’ll find the classical passionfruit, cut-grass and gooseberry characters along with a mineral-like palate of good length and crisp drying acidity. Drink soon with a plate of crunchy deep-fried whitebait or perhaps some creamy goat’s cheese.

Amelia Park SSB_2018.jpg

Amelia Park 2018
Margaret River Semillon Sav Blanc

A consistent performer with loads of lively tropical fruit, a dash of citrus and nashi pear. It’s a drink-soon wine although the tight acidity will allow it to age for a short time. Try it with a serving of flash-fried scallop and a crisp green salad with a lemony dressing.

Soumah 2018 Yarra Valley Pinot Grigio.jpg

Risky Business 2018
King Valley, Pinot Gris

From a high altitude vineyard, which is ideal for the variety, this is light straw in appearance, offers gentle aromatics of pear and melon and a medium-weighted palate of white stone fruit, textural chalkiness and soft finishing acidity. Absolutely perfect with a light pasta dish, say eggplant lasagna.

Terraced Hills Chard_2017.jpg

Terraced Hills 2017
Adelaide Hills Chardonnay

A modern style of chardonnay, nothing is overblown. Stone fruit and citrus are balanced by judicious oak and there is nice texture provided by some lees character. A good length persists to a crunchy acid finish. Would easily handle char-grilled shellfish or chicken. We like it.

Juniper Small Batch Fiano_2018.jpg

Juniper 2018
Margaret River Small Batch Fiano

Light floral qualities and melon fruit enhance this wine, along with a subtle textural nuttiness and savoury character. It’s beautifully balanced after some oak barrel fermentation and lees contact. One of the best fianos on the market and already a dual gold medal winner.

Pikes Riesling_2018.jpg

Pikes Clare Valley 2018
Traditionale Riesling

One of the most consistent white wines in Australia. It bobs up most years, even when dealt an awkward vintage. This is typical with lime leaf and tropical fruit, long and textural, dry and with cleansing acidity. We love this style with pan-fried whiting fillets and a crunchy salad.

Dukes Magpie Hill Res Riesling_2018.jpg

Dukes Magpie Hill Reserve 2018
New Block Riesling

Wonderful new riesling from young vines planted in Duke’s vineyard between Mt Barker and the Porongurups. It’s similar to their celebrated established riesling, very long and dry with scalpel-sharp acidity. We’d prefer to age it, but you will probably succumb to pressure and knock a top off now.

Millbrook Res Chard_2017.jpg

Millbrook 2017
Single Vineyard Geographe Chardonnay

Mid straw and with green tinges, this has the lifted aromas of yellow nectarine, citrus and light smoky oak. The medium-weighted palate is brilliantly balanced and structured with pristine fruit, oak, spice and finishing tannins. Winemaker Damian Hutton is the unsung hero of the Peter Fogarty stable of wines.

Dalrymple Pipers River Cave Block Chard_2016.jpg

Dalrymple 2016
Cave Block Chardonnay

You are offered plenty of complexity in this chardonnay, there’s nectarine, peach and grapefruit, smoky oak, a grainy mealy character, nuttiness and spice. From a warm vintage which provides the ripe fruit characters and yet the southern Tasmanian latitude is responsible for the firm acidity.

Elderton 2016 E Series Shiraz_Cabernet Sauvignon.jpg

Mojo 02 2017
Shiraz Barossa Valley

A value Barossa shiraz full of spicy red berry fruit, a good dollop of vanilla, anise and coffee flavours. Grippy sandy tannins add to the structure and it drinks well now and will in the short term. Serve with bratwurst sausage accompanied by sauerkraut or mild mustard.

Thistledown Gorgeous Grenache_2018.jpg

Gorgeous Grenache 2018
No1 Old Vine Small Batch

Thistledown Wines crafted this youngster from selected old-vine grapes from around McLaren Vale and the Riverland. The aim was to produce a well-priced easy-drinking juicy grenache and they have succeeded, big time. This is not for the cellar but for quaffing in the next twelve months. Great for the barby.

Torzi Matthews Schist Rock Shiraz_2017.jpg

Torzi Matthews 2017
Schist Rock Single Vineyard Barossa Shiraz

From a cooler vintage and the higher altitude Eden Valley area of the Barossa, so don’t expect a thumping blockbuster red. It’s medium bodied, has plum and blueberry fruit, well-balanced tempered French oak, touch of spice, fine tannins and drinks so well right now. The value is amazing.

Ulithorne Nova Duo_2018.jpg

Ulithorne 2018
Nova Duo McLaren Vale

Modern youthful red wine made from grenache and shiraz with buckets of plummy and strawberry fruit along with a shaking of spice, dressed up in a medium-weighted package. It’s simple drinking, a style that is in great demand in our stores today. Remember, chill it a little for warm weather consumption.

Mandoon Cab Merlot_2016.jpg

Mandoon Estate 2016
Margaret River Cabernet Merlot

From the old Research Station vineyard in Margaret River, this shows a depth of fruit that is expected from older vines like these. You’ll see plum and blackcurrant, integrated tannins, spice and good structure in a medium-bodied package. And it‘s good value, from this talented winemaker.

Ricca Terra 2017 The Marathon Man.jpg

Hay Shed Hill 2016
Margaret River Malbec

This looks like a brute in the glass with its dense black purple colour and it is, but it’s a soft and cuddly brute with generous rounded plummy fruit and is well structured with chalky drying tannins on the finish. This style is common in Argentina but rare in Oz. Worth a stab.

S.C.Pannell 2017 McLaren Vale Garnacha Basso.jpg

Two Hands 2017
Gnarly Dudes Barossa Valley Shiraz

Medium-bodied more than full, this has blueberry, deep cherry and plum fruit, well-integrated tannins, good length and finish. We enjoy the lighter alcohol and suppleness on the palate. Well-priced quality red that suits slow-cooked lamb shanks with a red-wine sauce and potato mash.

Joseph Faiveley Bourgne Pinot Noir_2016.jpg

Joseph Faiveley 2016
Bourgogne Pinot Noir (Fr)

It’s not often we recommend red Burgundy at this price, it’s hard to find. From a 200 year-old family domaine in Nuits-Saint-Georges and an acceptable, although low-crop vintage, this has fleshy cherry fruit, grippy tannins, a medium body and neat finish. Made from grapes grown throughout the extended region. Best to drink soon.

Castelli Frankland River Cab Sauv_2016.jpg

Castelli 2016
Frankland River Cabernet Sauvignon

A medium-weighted cabernet, this has briary blackberry fruit and dustiness, along with a layered complexity of French oak, anise, spice and ripe tannins. Another fine red from Frankland, sometimes overlooked as a premium red wine region in WA. Drinks beautifully now and will cellar for another few years.

Majella 2015 Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon.jpg

Victory Point 2015
Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon

Deep red in colour, this is chockers with mulberry and blackcurrant fruit and has a whack of oak. Tannins add to the structure and balance and the wine drinks pretty well right now, although another few years in the bottle won’t harm it at all.

Tim Smith Wines 2016 Barossa Shiraz.jpg

Kaesler 2016
The Bogan Barossa Valley Shiraz

A big wine, full of ripe black fruit, not unlike plum pudding. The grapes are from the warm Valley floor and the palate balance of fruit, oak and tannins is impeccable. Unfiltered, it’s a sipping wine more than a gulper and suits matured Cheddar or Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese with fresh crusty bread.
