On the Vine - Your Premium Wine Guide

Every fortnight, the Liquor Barons wine panel meets in the cellar of the Liquor Barons Swanbourne store, to look through 30-40 wines. This is conducted totally masked, and is an exhaustive process. The wines are discussed after each bracket and all points are shared and recorded. In this way, the best wines are selected on their merits - not their labels - and are then presented to you each quarter. Consider us your personal wine buyers.

Wine expert Rod Properjohn leads this effort, with his wealth of wine knowledge and experience he presents you with tasting notes for each wine, enjoy!

A note from Rod

Your panel has had a solid workout in the last quarter and we have arrived at a terrific range of wines for this, the Spring release of On the Vine. We don’t have any favourites but suggest you try the two white imports, they are different and exciting and the reds across the board show no sign of slowing down, there are still some cold days ahead of us. The French red is one of the best value wines from that country that we have seen in a while and Hay Shed Hill’s cabernet sauvignon is a purler.

Am Berg Ott 2016, Grüner Veltliner (Aut)

We’ve previously recommended to you Australian examples of ‘groovy’, this is an authentic one from Austria. A medium straw colour and with a little spritz, it has citrus aromas and a light apple pie and cream texture and flavour. A squeeze of lemon gives it lift, as does a good finishing acidity.

Leeuwin Estate 2017 Siblings Margaret River, Sauvignon Blanc

A small dash (10%) of semillon here adds some fullness and citrus to this sauvignon blanc. It’s a light bright wine with grassy flavours and some additional spicy and herbal characters to add interest. It’s well structured and balanced with a neat acid finish.

Pass-o Fiano B.jpg

Pass-O Fiano B. 2017,
Salento Vendemmia Tardiva (It)

Fiano is a variety which we are enjoying lately, both the Australian version and also from the home country, Italy. Although a difficult label to read, this wine is a deep straw colour, fresh and lively with a ripe orange expression, slight grape sweetness across the palate and is beautifully balanced by crisp acidity.

The Alchemists 2017 Reserve Elixir Single Vineyard, Sauvignon Blanc

From Margaret River, this is mid straw in colour and has a lemony nose with the nuttiness of new oak and a solid character. The palate is medium weight, has citrus flavours and the winemaker’s influence shows up with textural grip and light smoky finish. This is a food wine more than a quaffer..

La Vieille Ferme 2017,
Rosé (Fr)

A very consistent wine from the Perrin family in Ventoux, Rhône Valley, it has been featured in this August publication before. Pale pomegranate in colour, the attractive youngster has wild floral notes along with cherry and Turkish delight characters. It is dry and cleansing, a lovely drink with light Asian cuisine.

Dog Point SB.jpg

Dog Point Vineyard 2017 Marlborough, Sauvignon Blanc (NZ)

Handpicked grapes and made under organic principles, this delightful young savvy won’t disappoint. There’s the ubiquitous gooseberry, leafy greens, fresh herbs and stone fruit. The palate has a mineral edge, just a little grape sugar and good length. It finishes with a cleansing tart acidity.

Streicker 2016 Ironstone Block Old Vine Chardonnay, Margaret River

A traditional style of chardonnay without it being overblown. It’s bold with grapefruit, stone fruit, spice, roasted nuts and a creaminess that will endear it to most chardonnay drinkers and the finish has a mineral edge that will encourage you back for another taste. Classy wine from the top chardonnay region in Oz.

K&B Riesling.jpg

K + B 2018 Mt Barker, Riesling

When two smart West Aussie winemakers, Michael Kerrigan and Gavin Berry combine talents and use the best riesling fruit from a great vintage in the Great Southern – you get a brilliant wine. Although this is as tight as an E string on a violin, it has captivating citrus blossom aromas and a zesty limefruited dry palate that stretches forever along the palate.

Hay Shed Hill 2015 Margaret River, Cabernet Sauvignon

Deep ruby in colour, this has all the characteristics of a Margs’ cabernet. There’s scented blackcurrant, leafy tobacco, firm tannins, a medium body and excellent length and finish. It flies under the radar, as it’s one of the region’s better cabernets without the high price tag.

Bremerton 2016 Tamblyn,
Langhorne Creek

A blend of cabernet sauvignon, shiraz, malbec and merlot grown in Langhorne Creek is responsible for this red. It’s a generous well-balanced wine with perfumed red berry aromas, mouth-filling fruit, spice and soft tannins. It’s one to drink soon, so let’s hop in.

Hofer Barbera.jpg

Hofer 2017 Langhorne Creek,

You won’t miss this on the shelf; it has an arresting colourful label, it is almost surreal. The wine is nearly as bright, a medium ruby colour with floral and leafy herbal notes, red fruit and gentle tannins along the palate. It’s a wine to quaff without thinking about it too much.

Mazza 2014 Geographe, Tempranillo

From a small vineyard in Donnybrook, a little east of Margaret River, this wine speaks highly of the Spanish red variety it’s made from. Medium red, it has a spicy nose with a hint of anise and the palate is long, savoury and satisfying with drying sandy tannins.

Collins & Co. 2016 Malbec

This label sources fruit from South Australia and releases wines accordingly. From the Limestone Coast in the southeast, this malbec is a deep ruby colour with sweet floral, red berry and dried herb aromas and a palate that offers ripe fruit, a milk chocolate softness and gentle acidity. A drink-soon wine.

Paul Conti Cab Malbec.jpg

Paul Conti Wines 2015 Margaret River, Cabernet Malbec

Here’s a generous blend of these two popular varieties made by Jason Conti. Ripe red fruits are prevalent here along with a hint of regional eucalypt, a solid dose of vanillin oak and chalky tannins give the wine balance. Malbec imparts density of colour and palate softness to the firm cabernet sauvignon.

Stoney Rise 2016 Pinot Noir, Tasmania

Here’s another drink-soon pinot. It’s a little quiet on the nose with gentle red berries but evolves on the palate with full juicy fruit flavours, dried herbs, earthiness and good structure. Magical wine with pink duck breast and a sweet berry sauce.

The Hedonist 2016 Shiraz, McLaren Vale

Plump red berries hold pride of place in this deeply coloured red wine. Then there is the complexity and the structure – mocha, dark chocolate, earthiness, fine tannins, spicy oak and silky textures. There is a lot of pleasure in this full bodied wine, which was produced adhering to biodynamic principles.

Giant Steps Pinot Noir.jpg

Giant Steps 2017 Pinot Noir,
Yarra Valley

The winemaking team rates this vintage very highly in the Yarra and although the wine is at the entry level and well priced, it’s a smashing drink. Don’t worry about the lightness of colour, there’s a wealth of cherry and rhubarb, a good length of palate and moderating acid to finish.

$29.99 each in any six pack

Yalumba 2015 Paradox Shiraz,
Northern Barossa

A very traditional presentation of shiraz from the Barossa. The wine is more modern day however, not as full as expected, perhaps the real paradox. We enjoy the velvety blueberry and plum flavours and soft, although generous tannins and the good drink that it is. That will do us.

Poachers Ridge Shiraz.jpg

Poacher’s Ridge 2014 Sophie’s Yard Shiraz, Great Southern

Deep mulberry in colour, this has youth on its side. It has spicy dark fruits with a decent whack of vanillin oak and dry chalky tannins along a medium weighted palate to a clean finish. Will age gracefully for at least another eight years. You are advised to decant before enjoying.
