Independent Spirit Kaye Guthrie Adonis is the owner of AKA Artwear and a trailblazer for WA’s fashion scene, creating wearable street art for women that’s bold and completely unique. One of her outfits was voted top 10 at 2022 Fashion Week by Vogue Australia and if that’s not enough, she’s even dressed Gwen Stefani, Lady Gaga, Tiger and Khaleesi, just to name a few!

Q & A with Kaye

What makes you an Independent Spirit?

I started my global fashion label without any fashion knowledge. I have the ability to be fierce and not worry about what other people think; I do what I like, as long as it’s not hurting anyone. I just do it!

What do you love about Western Australia?

When I came here 17 years ago I took a look around and I thought, I can do anything here. WA has the best of both worlds, I love living in Northbridge and I also love having City Beach just around the corner.

What’s AKA Artwear all about?

AKA is about women being bold, transparent, not being bashful and accepting and owning all our achievements, because men do it all the time and women don’t. I don’t put sizes on my clothes because women have dealt with that their whole life. 

What’s your favourite quote?

I love this quote from Martin Luther King’s wife, “If the soul of a nation is to be saved, we must become the soul.”
