The Story of Mr Matsumoto Subheading
Matso’s Mr Matsumoto – Japanese Style Lager
The story of Matso’s began in the heart of Broome, hailed as the pearling capital of the world. Back in the 1950s, the iconic store was a local staple and a true cornerstone of the community. Fast forward to 1997, and it was time to swap stock shelves for beer taps, keeping locals refreshed and visitors curious ever since.
Mr Matsumoto is a Japanese Style Lager born from Matso’s origin story and the incredible Matsumoto family, who owned Matso’s General Store for over 50 years. They were pioneers in Broome’s pearling industry and helped build the very fabric of the town. This brew is a direct nod to those roots and the courageous Japanese pearl divers who once explored the depths of the Indian Ocean—quietly brave, deeply skilled, and forever part of Broome’s enduring spirit.
Brewed in their honour, Mr Matsumoto captures the timeless discipline of Japanese beer craftsmanship: uncomplicated, unmistakable, and made to dive right into.
Tasting notes: Clean and subtle with delicate grainy malt notes and a whisper of floral hops
Serving suggestion: icy cold straight from the fridge or poured into a chilled tall beer glass or lager flute.
Food pairing: Freshly shucked natural oysters, kingfish sashimi, nigiri, and prawn rolls.
