“The Filius punches well above its weight and is often a go-to cabernet when I'm looking for some modestly priced drinking.”
Ray Jordan - The West Australian
2018 Filius Chardonnay: Vasse Felix Chardonnay is typified by its bright, elegant fruit, subtle wild complexities and a tight acid structure, reflecting the vibrancy and purity of this variety in Margaret River. 'Filius' translates to 'son of' in Latin, reflecting the relationship between this wine and its premier 'father'.
2017 Filius Cabernet Sauvignon: 'Son of' the Vasse Felix Cabernet Sauvignon. It carries the structure, power and tannins of classic Cabernet in an earlier drinking, more forward style from fruit sourced from each of the Vasse Felix vineyards.
Established in 1967 by regional pioneer Dr Tom Cullity, Vasse Felix is Margaret River’s founding wine estate. One of the great wine regions of the world, Margaret River enjoys a truly unique environment and climate which makes it a paradise for winemakers and wine lovers alike. Owned by the Holmes a Court family since 1987, Vasse Felix has carefully expanded its vineyards over the decades to include four distinct and exceptional sites around the Margaret River region which grow fruit for the entire wine collection. Vasse Felix’s wines reflect the varietal strengths of Margaret River, with a focus on Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, as well as Shiraz and Sauvignon Blanc / Semillon blends. The wines are vinified with minimal intervention and bottled within the Estate’s modern winery. Vasse Felix wines are recognised benchmarks in Margaret River and Australia, and the Estate is one of the country’s draw-card winery destinations.
What’s it like
2018 Filius Chardonnay:
COLOUR: Bright pale straw colour.
NOSE: An open fragrant perfume reminiscent of apple pie, delicate spice and milk arrowroot biscuits. Perfectly ripe notes of lemon, peach and mango mingle with light pear and a hint of white pepper.
PALATE: A very comfortable mouthfeel with fleshy softness, fruit sweetness and full body tempered by a beautiful fresh acid crunch toward the finish. Almost a mango-like texture with a tangy twist, fused with slightly undercooked pie crust.
2017 Filius Cabernet Sauvignon:
COLOUR: Ruby garnet with a purple hue.
NOSE: A deep perfume with blackcurrant, blueberry and coffee mocha complexities. Notes of dusty earth and woody perennial herbs mingle with hints of nori, dried forest leaves and wild mushrooms to create an inviting aroma.
PALATE: A light fragrant entrance with blackcurrant, raspberry and pot pourri builds to earthy complexities and fine dry dusty tannins which serve to frame the fruit. A comfortable, soft, juicy body and tannin profile finishes the wine fresh and long.
Did you know:
As Margaret River’s leading varieties, Cabernet and Chardonnay are naturally our principal focus.
The methods of production are almost identical to our Vasse Felix Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, with subtle winemaker influences and barrel blending the final determinants of the wines’ styles.
The Cabernet Sauvignon (Malbec) style represents both the history and future of these varieties at Vasse Felix. The very first wine produced at Vasse Felix and for Margaret River, was our 1972 Cabernet Sauvignon Malbec.
The Filius Chardonnay has been crafted at Vasse Felix since 1990, however until 2013 it was simply known as the Vasse Felix Chardonnay (2013 was the first vintage under the Filius name).
Our Filius Chardonnay and Filius Cabernet Sauvignon are both fermented using only wild (naturally occurring) yeast from the vineyards
