MONKEY SEE, MONKEY DO
This month’s Spirit of the Month is a relatively new player on the blended malt block – especially when you consider the long history of its components… Monkey Shoulder is a blend of three key Speyside Single Malt whiskies, Scotland’s most popular region. Without any monkeying around, these whiskies are aged exclusively in ex-Bourbon casks to bring a prominent smooth and rich flavour profile.
These malts are hand selected by Brian Kinsman, Malt Master for William Grant and Sons, including overseeing Glenfiddich and The Balvenie. This blended whisky is engineered to be made for mixing in your favourite concoctions, but ultimately stands the age old test of quality when served neat or on the rocks.
We love Monkey Shoulder for a whole host of reasons… but overwhelmingly it is excellent value for money when you consider the skill and resources that are employed in its creation; it’s an elegant and rich whisky - both complex and balanced, but most of all, it’s a taste of the rugged moorlands of Scotland. Monkey Shoulder invites you to play with your whisky, to break loose from the old traditions and try your scotch in whatever manner you enjoy best.
Nose: An elegant, stylish nose of marmalade, Crema Catalana (apologies, but it really is there), cocoa and malt. Plenty of vanilla and a sprinkling of winter spice (nutmeg, cloves and cinnamon) alongside a mouth-watering hint of aniseed.
Palate: Very malty, creamy delivery with a suggestion of berry fruit. Juicy toasted barley, cloves and butterscotch. Manuka honey, hot-buttered-toast and dried apricot develop.
Finish: Medium length, spicy oak and a hint of peppermint on the tail.
